The following winter, while half-watching TV, I saw a house flash across the screen. It was THE HOUSE, the fantasy house from our spot on the river. And low and behold, the place on the river, the place we had been drawn to repeatedly had a name, Payne Hollow.”

Bob Canida, Jonathan Greene and Dobree Adams visit Payne Hollow

Bob Canida is a longtime friend of the Hubbards, collected much of his art. He and his wife, Charlotte, allowed Harland to hospice at their home in Madison at the end of his life. Bob is well associated with Payne Hollow on the Ohio and has been over there many time in recent years. Husband and wife, Jonathan and Dobree, were dear friends as well, and published the 2nd and 3rd edition of Payne Hollow as well a the Oyo series of river themed literature that had illustrations by Harlan. They had not been to Payne Hollow since the late 80s when both Harlan and Anna passed.

Payne Hollow Back in the Day

Curt Jacobs visits Payne Hollow for the first time in over 15 years. He would visit often as a child and young adult with his father. He and his family ran the Madison Courier newspaper for 6 generations. His uncle was Don Wallis, who edited the OYO series of books on river writing published by Gnomon press, and also wrote a book about Harlan Hubbard called, Harlan Hubbard and the River: A Visionary Life.
