Payne Hollow is a unique homestead with a quiet history of resilience, a deep and abiding appreciation for nature and what it provides us. Harlan and Anna Hubbard lived a remarkably creative, full, and sustainable life off-the-grid. Their gentle way of living speaks to the challenges we are experiencing today, including climate change, loss of natural habitat and how to live gently on the land.

Help Save Payne Hollow!

Over the next 3-years the board and advisors of Payne Hollow on the Ohio plan to raise an estimated $1.1 million to support an ambitious mission, including $250,000 to purchase the 60-acre Trimble County, Kentucky property with Harlan and Anna’s home and studio. As of September 30th, we are thrilled to report that the property is secure and now owned by Payne Hollow on the Ohio.

While we’ve reached our first milestone, there is still much work to be done and ways for you to help. Our Phase II fundraising goal of $500,000 will support work to document the site and preserve the physical history of the house and art studio. This work includes hiring professionals to perform an invaluable comprehensive land survey, a full ecological flora and fauna survey, draft documentation used to apply for National Register of Historic Places status, as well as other national and state preservation programs, and the inventory and proper storage of historic artifacts and structures.

Following the stabilization of the two structures, the survey of the land and a property clean-up, the board will begin a long-range planning process that will look at ways for Payne Hollow to become an integral educational resource, as look to future purchases of adjacent property that will allow better access by foot and potential for a boat landing on the Indiana riverbank.

As I came down to the river, I saw water, shores, and sky in their primitive aspect. Every place seemed alive and honest, even these that are so familiar. I must not let this feeling wear off. The earth must never seem worn.
